Welcome New Students & Parents!
We hope this page will help you in answering questions you have about our band program as well as provide you an idea of what it will be like to be a member of the Norman High School Band Program.
What to Expect
Band is a year long course. Everyone starts in the marching band, this class meets 0 hour (7:15am) and will last through the last week of October or the first week in November. Once marching season ends students will audition and be placed in a concert ensemble based on their performance in the audition. The Wind Ensemble is the top performing group and the Symphonic band is the next level ensemble.
Frequently Asked Questions
notQ: Do I have to be in marching band?
A: Yes, you GET to be in marching band. Marching band is often the reason students quit band from 8th grade to 9th grade. We teach marching band by starting at the most basic level, we know you haven't marched before. Marching band is also when our students are the closest and create lots of great relationships. This is where we become a family.
Q: Can I participate in a sport or other activity and still be in band?
A: Yes! There are very few real conflicts with sports or other activities. In those events, as long as there is communication we will make it work. We want our students to be involved in the school, being a well-rounded student is important.
Q: Does high school band cost money?
A: Yes, BUT this should not prevent anyone from being in the Norman High Band Program. New students will need to purchase items specific for marching band and band camp. We try to keep our costs extremely low versus other band programs near us and we can create a simple payment plan specific to any student or family. Again, we need to be clear, money should not be a reason a student is not in band at NHS.
